ChaosHunter assumes that the character which has been specified in Windows as a list separator is the delimiter which divides fields in a file.

In the United States, the list separator defaults to a comma. If the designated list separator is not found in the file, the program looks for a tab character or space (in that order) to separate the fields in your data file.

The operating system on your computer determines how to change the list separator setting (usually the default setting works best).

No matter whether the list separator character is used as a field delimiter, or the tab or space is used as a field delimiter, the format of the numbers in the fields must be as defined in the Windows Control Panel, Regional and Language Options. This enables users in countries other than the U.S. to read files in their native format.

However, users outside the U.S. may read our examples files, and other comma separated files with U.S. number format (with the decimal symbol as a period). This is because if ChaosHunter cannot recognize the fields as delimited by the list separator, the tab, or the space, it will try to read the file as a comma separated file with the period as a decimal symbol. Of course, users outside the U.S. could also set their Windows Control Panel to U.S. formats, but this is not necessary.
